Why isNeon Genesis Evangelionsuch a big deal?
Evangelionhas been one of the most popular anime series ever created pretty much from the start.
Any person can see it and give his/her own answer.
Thats at least partly because Anno reportedly couldnt always decide what he wanted the answer to be.
Thus,Evangelions TV run ends with the lead characters minds being systematically shredded apart and put back together.
Death threats aside,Evangelionwas a major success, one that saw fans clamoring for a real ending.
The commercial piece of that is why Netflix licensed the show in the first place.
Why is it such a big deal thatNeon Genesis Evangelionis on Netflix?
In every Netflix market around the world,Evangelionis available to stream.
So why are some fans mad at Netflix?
Its all the more awkward given that Kaworu and Shinji are speaking to each other in a bathhouse.
He’s the first person to show Shinji love in a way Shinji can understand.
He’s SO important to Shinji’s development as a character.
That isnt the only place where the Netflix dialogue feels unnecessarily stilted or clunky by comparison.
is inconsistent throughout it just doesnt always work.
Why didnt Netflix just use the original version of the dub?
What else is different about the Netflix version?
I poured so much of my life into that original show and those movies.
It has been replaced with a piano track fromEvangelions soundtrack.
Should I still watchNeon Genesis Evangelion?
Id start with episodes 126 before watchingThe End of Evangelion.
It is also likely much more affordable than shelling out $200 for worn-out DVDs from the mid-2000s.
Even the new dub, for all its detractors, isnt that bad.
That aspect of the dub does feels like its own fresh take on a familiar work.
Mostly, though, you should watchEvangelionbecause itholds up.
DeMarco still recommends it without reservation.
Hes directing a tetralogy of films titledRebuild of Evangelion the last of which is scheduled for release in 2020.
We could all use more of that in our lives.
