Long story short, they used to be humans and now theyre ice monsters.
They dont appear to speak to one another, but they do use some sort of nonverbal communication.
Martins books, theyre a much more reputable-looking bunch with chameleon-like armor that perfectly reflects their surroundings.
Theyre pretty ragtag on the show, although some wear leather armor.

Whats the history of White Walkers?
Lets just stick with the basics.
(Remember how Ned beheaded a guy in front of his children?
That was the same guy.)
Unfortunately, few of Old Nans contemporaries believed that the stories have any basis in reality.
(They did so byplunging a piece of dragonglass into a mans heart.)
That Walker eventually turned on them, but we dont know why.
Afterward, the Wall was built by the founder of House Stark a man named Brandon Stark, a.k.a.
Bran the Builder so that keep the White Walkers from returning south.
Around the same time, the Nights Watch was formed to serve as guardians of the realm.
What are wights?
Think of the wights as theGOTversion of zombies: Theyre the undead hordes who fight for the White Walkers.
What about all those animals?

The animals are just another form of wight.
Any dead animal can be brought into the servitude of the Night King, even a dragon.

Thats a tricky question!
We know how the very first Walker was created, but we dont know if thats the only way.
How do you kill a White Walker?
The second weapon known to destroy White Walkers is Valyrian steel.
As Jon discovered back in season one, fire is the easiest way to destroy a wight.
(Thats why the Nights Watch burned corpses.)
Whos the White Walker that killed Viserion?
Thats the Night King.
