In a short period of time, hes solidified himself as the go-to screenwriter for an entire film genre.

Moreci describes it asEscape From New Yorkcrossed withThe Warriors a post-apocalyptic, anti-capitalism adventure ride.

The world has ended and theres still people in a stupid mall, like, fighting for nothing!

says Moreci, with Dauberman adding, The world is ended and yet youre still bitching over space!

Over the years Ive found that is just as important as what the material is.

Because Ive done it where its like, Oh my God, I love this so much!

Then youre just kind of like, Ugh, Ive got to work with these people?

Ive known the Vault guys for a while because Ive just been a fan of their books.

When I initially had this idea forMall, they were the first guys I talked to.

Im working on something now and Ive got to say, Im just approaching it as a writer first.

Like withSalems Lot, Im not thinking about the director or anything coming after.

Youre working onSalems Lotnow?GD: I was writing it this morning!

Im really copy and pasting it from the book at this point, just doing some formatting.

Or, after writing threeAnnabellemovies, did you accidentally put her inIt?GD: [Laughs] No.

Its kind of like a goldfish.

Theres a fucking castle in here!

I go around again, Oh my God!

Theres a castle in here!

So, once Im in whatever Im writing, Im pretty in that world.

It took me out, and I couldnt do other things for however long I was working on that.

[DC Universes]Swamp Thingfor streaming was a whole new thing.

So, those are kind of the risks I take.

I want it to be for everybody.

Working on comics is a whole different muscle that Im still trying to strengthen.

And Michael, are you similarly a populist?Michael Moreci: Its the same as with Gary.

When it comes down to picking projects, I dont have a real capital-A artistic bone.

Its hard, though, because comics is so dominated by existing IP.

Everything is under an umbrella of stuff thats been around for a very, very long time.

So you have to kind of navigate that.

I wanted a little bit lighter, more playful, more fun.

And thats something I wanted.

MM: But thats always the trick, right?

When youre doing stuff likeConjuring, thats a preexisting thing.

Finding that balance is tricky sometimes.

Thats one of the biggest things that Vault and I really kind of gelled over.

I want to do that withMall.

A TV show doesnt work in a comic.

So, I wanted to make something thats thoroughly a comic, and I thinkMallis.

I think its a strength and a weakness, not having that kind of memory.

One of my favorites of all time isRaiders of the Lost Ark.

It was such a fun experience, and then his fucking face melts off at the end!

Its like,What the fuck?

In terms of rides, too, I think thats also something we brought toMall.

Thats an itch thatMalldefinitely scratches for sure.

I just love that stuff, man!

Id be lying a bit to say it didnt.

However, thats notwhyI wanted to do this.

Theres no reason I couldnt have just pitched this as a series or as a movie or whatever.

And the answers is yeah.

I think it lends itself to a great series.
