Theres a new Marvel thing!
And adifferentnew Marvel thing!
And yet another anti-hero drama thatstoo dark to actually see!
What if, though, you want to watch something thats legitimately different?
If you feel burned out by that dull drumbeat of sameness, maybe youd like to try something else.
Slings and Arrowsis also absolutely sincere, almost to the point of painful self-awareness.
So, yeah, it is not the most subtle show.
But it is absolutely, unshakably heartfelt about the power of art.
Is it good if people like it?
Is it good if the artists like it?
If it makes money?
If it says something true?
When I first sawSlings and Arrowsin 2008, it made a hugeimpression on me.
(Season one isHamlet, two isMacbeth, and three isKing Lear.)
I was utterly transported by the shows moments of artistic transformation.
I was all in.
Watching it ten years ago,Slings and Arrowsseemed like the most prestige of prestige TV.
Its opening theme songs areinsidery, spoofingjokeson famous tragedies.
What could be more prestige than that?
Slings and Arrowsnow feels quaint in a way I hadnt appreciated back when it first came out.
But rewatching it now, its quaint in a way that I still find absolutely beguiling.
It makes me happy to love theater, and it makes me happier to love television.
